Brendan suggested the dojo at first but took that back, since weapons and drama did not go hand in hand well. But while we were in that hallway, we passed the open garden, which brimmed with lush, exotic plants. The atmosphere was calming, and crickets chirped inside. We stepped into the underground grotto. The ceiling sparkled with magically created stars, making it seem as if we were under the real night sky. A waxing moon shone overhead.

I could tell Grimes was trying to stall the inevitable as he looked around. “This place is something.”

“I think some of that fruit might be from the fae realm or whatever it’s called.” Brendan pointed to some blue apples that hung from a nearby tree. They reflected the light from a hanging lantern nearby. “Let’s not touch that.”

Part of me wanted to stall, too. “We don’t need fruit, anyway. I bet a lot of this came from the fae.” I knew little about them, but I couldn’t get enough of this garden. Whoever had created it had even added dirt and grass to the floor.

There was a large, open brick plaza in the center of the garden. I glimpsed chalk dust all over the brick as if people used the place for magical rites. I knew there were Nature Mages and fae, and it made sense for them to work magic here since they likely maintained this public garden.

But we were alone. I heard no couples making out in here. Most of the Underground’s nocturnal residents were now under the Mother’s thumb, serving her under the threat of death. We needed a secluded place so Trish and Primrose wouldn’t come down and kill Grimes themselves.

I tensed as I sat down on the grass, cross-legged. Taking that posture helped to calm me. Mom had taken yoga at one point, and this reminded me of that. When we were staying in the Underground, I had tried to get her to check out the garden, but she refused. It was a shame. If she ever came around, she’d love this place.

Grimes sat opposite me as if afraid to get too close, and he shifted with nerves. He knew I hated him, and that gave me some satisfaction, but also sadness.

Brendan stood there like he wasn’t sure what to do.

“Can you leave us?” Grimes asked.

Brendan shot me a look that meant good luck. “Sure.”

I nodded. I wanted Brendan to hang around in case things got ugly. And what were the chances of that?

Once Brendan had walked out of the garden and walked some distance down the hall (far enough to make Grimes think he was out of earshot, but close enough to hear us) the ATC leader cleared his throat.

“Okay.” The tension got so thick I felt like it was crushing my chest.

Grimes looked at me with eyes that had gone redder than ever. “I don’t expect you to accept me, but I want you to know why I did what I did. Your
